Character Counter

Count characters with and without spaces instantly. Useful for X, SMS and meta descriptions.

How it works

  1. 1

Type or paste your text in the box: the count updates with every keystroke.

  2. 2

Look at the cards with the total, without spaces, letters, numbers and symbols.

  3. 3

Compare your result with the common limits shown below and adjust your text.

How does it work?

Counting characters matters when you have strict limits: a post on X (280), an SMS (160), a meta description (160), a search result title (60) or Facebook tags (250).

Here you count in real time the total characters, the ones without spaces and a breakdown into letters, numbers and symbols, so you know exactly where to trim or how much room you have.

Use cases

Optimized posts

Fit a message in X within 280 characters (the final limit shrinks with URLs).

Meta descriptions

Make sure your meta description stays under 160 characters and search snippets do not get cut off.

SMS texts

Verify an SMS stays at 160 characters, the single-message limit that avoids double billing.

Web content

Keep titles and article excerpts within reasonable lengths before publishing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between counting characters and words?

Characters count every letter, number or symbol, including spaces and line breaks. Words group characters separated by spaces. For X, SMS or meta description limits, characters matter.

Does it count spaces?

Yes: "Characters" includes everything, spaces included. The "Without spaces" card gives you the alternative measure, useful for some forms or identifiers.

How many characters does an SMS allow?

A standard GSM SMS allows 160 characters. If you use emojis or special characters, the limit drops to 70 because they count as unicode.
